2024 was a fantastic year professionally for Todd Arnison, E³ Consulting’s Property Tax Surveyor.

Having joined E3 in 2017 as a Degree Apprentice, he completed a BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying degree on day release at the University of Portsmouth, graduating in July 2022 with First Class Honours.

In November 2024, Todd passed his Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) - MRICS.

Todd said, “I am delighted to have passed my APC and qualified as a Chartered Surveyor.

“It has been a long road to become MRICS with a lot of ups and downs, which included two deferrals (the last of which as I came down heavily with Covid the day before my interview) and a referral in the last year.

“A fantastic outcome and even sweeter after the delays that life threw in the mix.

“A huge thank you to all those that have supported me throughout the process at various stages.”

The APC ensures that candidates are competent and meet the high standards of professionalism required to become a Chartered Surveyor.  The process is undertaken over a 24-month training cycle and is assessed against a number of competencies relevant to the surveyor’s area of practice, known as sector pathways - these are a mix of technical and professional practice, interpersonal, business and management skills – culminating in a final interview.

There are currently 22 different sector pathways in total, covering all types of surveying practice, Todd having passed under the ‘Taxation Allowances’ pathway – similar to the ‘Quantity Surveying and Construction’ pathway, with a more detailed focus on capital allowances and valuation, rather than project finance control and tendering.  Among the other pathways are some more recognisable ones such as ‘Building Surveying’ and ‘Valuation’, to the more specialist ‘Geomatics’ and ‘Personal Property/Arts and Antiques’, illustating the breadth of the surveying profession.

Alun Oliver, Managing Director and Todd’s Counsellor for the APC journey, said “It was great to hear Todd had succeeded in becoming MRICS, as he has been an exemplary candidate and very conscientious – scooping a number of awards and prizes whilst at the University of Portsmouth.  The APC format of preparing a detailed and technical project report as well as structured interview answering questions both on your report and wider surveying matters is a daunting challenge for all.  I think that is now eight Chartered Surveyors that I have supported, supervised or counselled – through their APC over the years – with a few others that have worked with me and/or at E3 Consulting - so delighted Todd has now become a fully-fledged Chartered Surveyor”.
