VAT can make an enormous difference to project costs, but the rules are often illogical, and HM Revenue and Customs are seldom helpful. E3 Consulting's Real Estate VAT Consultant, Martin Scammell guided the attendees through the reliefs and the pitfalls, special problems including 'preservation or alteration', outbuildings, retained facades, sales and lettings, churches and the wider policy issues.
