Congratulations to our Property Tax Surveyor Ian Barwick on achieving a distinction in his MSc in Quantity Surveying from the University of Portsmouth.  Over the past 2 years Ian has been sponsored by E3 Consulting, studying part-time for 1 day a week.

Property Taxation Surveying is a highly niche area; however it requires the daily active use of core quantity surveying skills in order to identify tax reliefs on commercial property.

The course has supported Ian to develop high quality property and construction skills and knowledge; including understanding the language of construction.

Cost estimation is a core skill in quantity surveying which is also highly relevant in property taxation surveying. For example, a recent £500,000 purchase of a car dealership involved the estimation of costs of elements within the property in exactly the same way as a quantity surveyor would build us the cost at an early stage.

Understanding of construction technology and the process of building is fundamental to optimising a claim for tax relief, as we need to understand how the building is being used in order to correctly apply the legislation.  A recent project incorporated a ventilation system which used the plenum wall as an integral part.  You need to have the technical knowledge to understand what this is and how it works, in order to determine the correct tax treatment.

Ian is currently going through the APC process, via the Taxation Allowances pathway, to become professionally qualified as a Chartered Surveyor. The Taxation Allowances pathway shares many competencies with Quantity Surveying but is focused on the taxation angle. Ian hopes to undergo his final assessment in mid-2017.
